2022 Results

Since its inception over 25 years ago, the Boutique Wine Show has been a champion of small producers.

In my first year as Chair, I was thrilled to see the diversity of origin of the top wines and the mix of established and lesser-known producers.

Quality was extremely high across the board. High medal strike rates were seen in the classic varieties of riesling, chardonnay, pinot noir, shiraz, and cabernet sauvignon.

However, there were also many exciting wines in the ‘other’ white and red classes, reflecting the innovative approach of small producers.

The sparkling and sweet wine categories were also strong, with the winning wines having fabulous character and personality.

Unearthing new producers is one of the absolute delights of the show, and there are plenty of new labels among the medallists.

To win a gold medal, or a trophy, is an extremely hard task, so the winners are to be wholeheartedly congratulated. The silver medal-winning wines are fabulous examples of their type, often narrowly missing out on the top spot. The bronze medal wines are delicious wines of character with quality well above the baseline.

In a crowded wine market, we hope the awards provide helpful direction to consumers about labels that have a quality above and beyond others in their category.

To the winning producers, the awards reflect your efforts and attention to detail in the pursuit of excellence, and we congratulate you on the high quality of your wines.

This show is a barometer of trends, styles, and fashion, so the judging team must have an open mind when judging. Quality comes in many forms, and we hope the results reflect this approach.

I sincerely thank and congratulate the judging team and stewards. They are a hardworking group of wine professionals with skill and integrity second to none. The quality of the results reflects their unwavering focus over the three days of judging.

Despite the climatic and economic challenges of the past few years, the high wine quality across the classes demonstrates that there is so much to celebrate about Australian and New Zealand wine. Thank you to all the small producers whose quality wines set our industry’s tone by speaking loudly and standing tall.
